In the spring of 2015, a group of boys and girls were taken on a tour of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. While there, one of the young visitors said to a chaperone that he had butterflies in his stomach, as if he were riding a roller coaster. The chaperone asked why, thinking the student might be ill. But the young man went on to say that he was simply excited to be on a college campus. He said a roller coaster could never compare to the thrill of being at NC A&T, because he never thought he would be walking across a college campus. The chaperone responded, now let me help you to see yourself walking into a college class as a student. That chaperone was Victor Earl, and that incident inspired Victor to start Alluvium Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to mentoring and showing youth the possibilities of what they once thought was improbable.

The definition of an alluvium is: different sources of flowing water that erode away loose soil and sediments and replenish with more fertile and mineral-rich soil. True to this definition, Alluvium Inc. seeks to use mentoring and life-skills training to loosen the grip of challenging behavior and self-defeating activity and replace them with the attributes and talents needed to help our youth craft productive lives.

Alluvium Inc. will go into high poverty schools to facilitate programming inclusive of mentoring, literacy, and technology to help the target audience make a connection between a quality education and an opportunity for their future. Using the coined phrase “The Tubman Effect”, Alluvium will get adults to come back and give back in an effort to bring others forward.
