What Is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS robs a person of the ability to walk, talk, swallow, and to breathe. ALS affects women and men of all ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. For unknown reasons, U.S. military veterans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ALS than civilians. As with most neurodegenerative diseases, currently there are no cures for ALS.
About The ALS Association Golden West Chapter:
The mission of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter is to discover treatments and cures for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest. Everything we do advances the search for effective treatments and cures for ALS.
