What is ALS?

ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neuromuscular disorder in which degeneration of the nerve leads to muscle weakness and impaired speaking, swallowing and breathing, eventually causing paralysis and death. There is currently no cure for ALS, but treatment and interventions can help alleviate some symptoms, improve quality of life and prolong survival.  The clinical progression can vary widely; patients typically live with the disease two to five years after onset of symptoms. With knowledge and resources available through the clinic, many patients live with improved quality of life.

The Alabama Chapter provides an array of services, at no cost to the patient or family, to make life more bearable as they battle ALS:

  • home visits for assessment of needs
  • financial support and referrals to many resources, including a wide variety of community and government services
  • loan of durable medical equipment
  • respite care to relieve families from around the clock care
  • home modifications for wheelchair accessibility
  • the ALS Care Clinic at Crestwood Medical Center
