The War of 1812 is an often overlooked and misunderstood war.  Was it the Second War of Independence?  Wasn't that the one where Dolley Madison saved the Washington portrait?  Why should we remember it today?  This war, which occurred in the United States and in Canada, on the land and on the sea, played a critical role in our nation's story.  It solidified our citizen's vision that we were a United States, not Individualized States.  It brought a newfound patriotic spirit that permanently marked the flag and eagle as our national symbols.  Our National Anthem was born from this flag that endured at Fort McHenry.  Alexandria played a critical role in this transformation.
