Rescuing and Protecting Donkeys in Need Since 1984

It began 42 years ago with the adoption of one deep-brown wild burro named Amber, rescued from the Mojave Desert. From that single, precious life, Amberwood Sanctuary grew into a fully operational sanctuary that has cared for 30 donkeys and wild burros throughout our history.

Amberwood Sanctuary Inc., founded by Carol Knight Watson, is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) located in a rural setting in Baker County, Georgia, dedicated since 1984 to providing permanent sanctuary and lifelong, compassionate care to donkeys who have experienced neglect, abandonment, or abuse. We are registered in good standing with the Georgia Secretary of State.

Our Mission

Our team of passionate volunteers and Board Members believes every donkey deserves safety, personal attention, and the chance to thrive. Today, 24 donkeys live in our care. Each one has a name, three barns to choose from, and the freedom to roam and graze across 16 acres of green pasture.

The herd includes one wild burro, eight senior standard donkeys who require special attention to reach their full 30–40 year lifespan, and fifteen Sardinian Mediterranean donkeys.

Daily Care 

Every donkey at Amberwood Sanctuary receives:

• Clean drinking water
• Nutritious hay, including natural forage
• Appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care
• Shelter and safe space to move comfortably
• Daily opportunities to interact freely with the herd
