Ambo Dance Theatre is a nonprofit arts organization based in Louisville, Kentucky, dedicated to making dance accessible, inclusive, and diverse. Under the visionary direction of Amberly M. Simpson, we combine elements from theatre, film, photography, and visual arts to create innovative, interdisciplinary works that address social issues and the human condition.

Our mission is rooted in Modern Dance, and we specialize in creating original concert dance works that inspire and engage diverse audiences. We provide access to dance education, performance, and career opportunities locally and beyond, fostering a supportive and inclusive dance community.

Our Vision

We aim to transform Louisville into a vibrant Dance Hub where dance is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or experience. A Dance Hub is a place where dance is widely accessible, diversely represented, and allows for participation at all levels—from brand new beginners to seasoned professionals. Ultimately, being a Dance Hub means breaking down barriers related to equity and inclusion in the arts.

Our Commitment

Ambo Dance Theatre is committed to:

  • Accessibility: Removing barriers to dance through paid professional work opportunities, scholarships, work-study programs, pay-what-you-can ticketing, and community engagement initiatives.
  • Innovation: Using a collaborative model to create original modern and contemporary dance works and providing sustainable compensation to all our performers.
  • Community: Creating space for people of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to be represented in our work and to participate in our dance education programs, community events, and performance opportunities.

What We Do

Original Productions

We create and perform original modern and contemporary dance works that inspire and engage diverse audiences. Our flagship productions, like The Graham Cracker: A Nutcracker Parody, reimagine classic stories with a modern, inclusive twist, bringing new perspectives to the stage.

Education and Outreach

Our robust education and outreach programs provide dance education to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. We offer:

  • Residencies: Engaging students in dance education workshops and performances through partnerships with local schools.
  • Scholarships and Work-Study Programs: Making dance accessible to those who might not otherwise afford it.
  • Community Classes: Offering affordable and pay-what-you-can classes to ensure everyone can experience the joy of dance.

Community Engagement

We are building a supportive and inclusive dance community by:

  • Collaborations: Partnering with other dance artists, companies, and cross-disciplinary artists to create unique and vibrant work.
  • Festivals: Hosting events like the Kentucky NACHMO Festival, which connects communities across the Commonwealth and provides a platform for more dance companies to perform.
  • Events: Organizing events like Dance Movie Nights and Contact Jams to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of dance within the community.

Professional Opportunities

We are committed to providing professional and sustainable opportunities for dancers. This includes:

  • Paid Positions: Offering paid roles for dancers in rehearsals and performances, setting a local precedent that dancers deserve compensation for their expertise.
  • Choreographic Opportunities: Providing emerging and established choreographers with platforms to present their work.

Advocacy for Inclusion

We strive to break down barriers related to equity and inclusion in the arts by ensuring our programs and performances represent and serve diverse communities. We do not discriminate in our casting or participation based on age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or any other aspects of a person's identity.

Be Part of Our Story

Join us in making Louisville a beacon for dance, celebrating all bodies, all identities, and all backgrounds. Together, we can break down barriers and inspire through the transformative power of dance. Thank you for your support and for being a vital part of Ambo Dance Theatre's journey.
