Between big issues and smart solutions is a global scientific community that's connected by the belief that science can make the world a better place.

It's our job to speak up for that community--and for YOU. And there’s no more important time for this work than now   .

Why does your support of AAAS today matter so much?

We all know that times become tougher for government funding as the U.S. deficit continues to climb.  So, how do we continue to “do good science” in the face of major budget cuts? How essential are advances in science and technology to the future of our nation and the world?

These are the kinds of issues that AAAS addresses every day. We know that by reducing our national investment in science, we risk losing ground in discovery. And that the solutions to so many of the challenges that face the world today will be science-based. And that by disinvesting in research, we discourage the would-be next generation of scientists from pursuing science careers.

AAAS works constantly to educate policy makers and the public about the importance of all disciplines of science to the future of the country and the world, providing a voice on issues that matter to the science community and society as a whole—topics like innovation and the economy, education, scientific integrity, the environment, international security, energy, and agriculture.

With your support, AAAS can continue to:

  • Highlight the importance of R&D funding and investment in innovation to advance our economy and ensure the future of our nation.
  • Provide reliable information to policymakers about the science underlying social issues.
  • Bring together individuals from across sectors and around the world to address major issues such as nuclear proliferation and bioterrorism.
  • Provide communication tools for scientists.
  • Help all Americans become literate in science, math, and engineering by laying the groundwork for education standards nationwide.

AAAS serves society through the advancement of science--a mission we pursue through a broad variety of programs, from efforts to enhance communication among scientists and with the public, provide a voice on societal issues, and promote the responsible use of science in public policy to activities to strengthen and diversify the workforce, foster science and technology education for everyone, and advance international cooperation. The world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science, AAAS members number about 130,000 worldwide, including scientists and engineers from all disciplines as well as educators and others.
