Saving Strokes is a rehabilitation through golf program that offers stroke survivors at all stages of recovery an opportunity to improve their strength, flexibility, coordination and balance. This fall, the Silicon Valley Division looks forward to hosting its annual Saving Strokes free golf clinic at Los Lagos Golf Course in San Jose. The event provides stroke survivors and their caregivers an opportunity to work with a professional golf instructor in a fun, relaxing environment. With your support,the American Heart Association can give more stroke survivors an opportunity to participate and bring greater awareness to stroke and heart disease to our local community.

Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives each year than cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases and accidents combined. On average, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke and it is the leading cause of long-term disability among adults. That’s why the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association works tirelessly to advance groundbreaking medical research, spread lifesaving knowledge and reach out to people of all ages about cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Since 1949, the American Heart Association has spent more than $3.3 billion on research to increase our knowledge about cardiovascular diseases and stroke.  From the development of CPR to open heart surgery, we have been a part of many important research milestones.  We've funded seven Nobel Prize winners, helped link dietary fat with cholesterol, funded the creation of the first pacemaker and supported early research for the arterial stent. We're second only to the federal government in funding cardiovascular and stroke research; however, each year we need more resources to attract and encourage promising scientists to careers in cardiovascular and stroke programs, fund high-quality research projects and originate new programs to meet the needs of the research community.

Last year alone, the Western States Affiliate funded millions in research to fight heart disease and stroke.  We’re creating healthier communities to ensure stronger, longer lives for you and your loved ones.
