ALS is a death sentence. The person who receives this diagnosis faces a progressive paralysis of the muscles, including those that control limb movement, swallowing and breathing. The brain remains unaffected.

The verdict of ALS is delivered into the hectic hubbub of one's daily life - jobs, families, care giving to children and grandchildren, grocery shopping, house cleaning, bill paying, community activities and travel. Additional requirements for palliative care, medical equipment, and final arrangements flood "normal" life until they threaten to overwhelm it. So the person with ALS stands with a foot in two worlds that are rapidly moving apart.

The ALS Association exists to help people with ALS bridge that chasm as long as possible. ALSA helps them claim what they can from daily life while accommodating the demands of progressive disability. ALSA helps people with ALS continue to contribute to the larger community. The ALS Association seeks to support dignity and independence, one person at a time, for persons with ALS.

Your support will help us develop new programs, while building upon current ones, enabling us to reach more people and families in need with state-of-the-art counseling, care and, most of all, desperately needed equipment. Please help us as we strive to improve the quality of life for hundreds and to find a cure for this dreaded disease. We truly appreciate your support as we continue the work of supporting the patients of Lou Gehrig's Disease, their caregivers and of those searching for the cure.
