The Anacostia River is only 8.5 miles long, but this river, in the shadow of the nation’s capitol, is full of big potential.

Bald Eagles nest along the Anacostia River.  There are places and moments of great beauty on the river.  What better place to enjoy this beauty and see a bald eagle – symbol of our nation’s greatness – than in the nation’s capital?

More than 800,000 people live in the Anacostia River watershed.  Millions of people visit the nation’s capital every year.  For residents and visitors, the Anacostia River should be a place of national pride. Showcased in our nation’s capital, the restoration of the degraded Anacostia River should be a model for all to see. 

From a distance, the river is beautiful. Up close, the picture’s not always so pretty.

Two billion gallons of untreated sewage mixed with stormwater dumps into the Anacostia River in the average year via the city’s antiquated combined sewer system.  Fixing this will cost approximately $2 billion.

Stormwater washes 70,000 tons of trash, toxic pollution, and sediment into the Anacostia River in the average year. These challenges can be overcome.  The technology and expertise are there
