Animal abandonment has reached crisis proportions in 2023, and it is happening in your community, right now.

There are countless reasons why people abandon their pets. Some are beyond the owner’s control, but many are not. Sometimes people just decide that caring for an animal is too time-consuming, too expensive, or too inconvenient. With no-kill shelters being chronically full, many of these people resort to abandoning their pets near interstates, wooded areas, and neighborhoods, or simply leaving them behind when they move. These heartbreaking incidents can be prevented!

At the Humane Society of Cobb County, an important part of our mission is to educate people about the responsibilities and realities of pet ownership. Our goal is to prevent abandonment before it happens. Our Education Program teaches people about basic pet care for various species, the importance of spay/neuter, and what a new owner can realistically expect to spend in terms of time and money. We also go beyond the basics with hands-on educational experiences featuring Animal Ambassadors.

Many animals are being left to fend for themselves, and it’s not just cats and dogs. Rabbits, reptiles, pocket pets, and farm animals are also routinely dumped. We’re equipped to help cats, dogs, and other small mammals who have been abandoned, as space allows. We heal their wounds, give them love, and nurse them back to wellness. Some of these animals go on to become Animal Ambassadors in our Education Program, where they can help ensure that others like them won’t suffer the cruelty of abandonment.

Our Animal Ambassadors are particularly effective in teaching children about kindness to animals. Even if a child’s family doesn’t have pets, it is of great value to our society for children to learn about respect and compassion for animals. That’s why we welcome many different youth groups to participate in our program and learn firsthand what animals are all about.

Please help us increase our ability to offer assistance to animals in dire need, by participating this GAgives on Giving Tuesday! Every contribution to our organization, no matter how great or small, monetary or in-kind, helps us provide support to homeless animals in Cobb County.

Our Mission

The mission of the Anna L. Haas Humane Society of Cobb County is to promote humane welfare and responsible animal guardianship through educational community outreach, shelter, and spay/neuter programs.

Who We Are

The Humane Society of Cobb County (HSCC) is an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter and charitable humane animal welfare organization. We do not receive any funding from and are not affiliated with Cobb County government, or any other local or national humane society or animal welfare organization. Therefore, we are primarily funded by donations.

The HSCC has served our community since 1957 and transitioned from a foster-based model to a brick-and-mortar no-kill adoption facility in the 1990s through the generosity of donors and supportive animal advocates.

Our pet food pantry has assisted many Cobb County pet owners for decades, who have struggled to keep their furry companions. As supplies allow, we provide temporary support to those in need to allow animals the opportunity to stay in loving homes and out of shelters.

What We Do

Our volunteer-based, no-kill shelter provides assistance to animals and pet owners in Cobb County and surrounding areas. We provide a safe haven as space allows for homeless animals, most of whom are in need of medical care or have been neglected or abused. Each animal is observed and assessed at the time of intake, and an appropriate care plan is developed to support their health and well-being as we work to find their best matched loving family and forever home. Some animals with chronic or challenging conditions remain at our sanctuary and receive ongoing care, love, and attention from staff, volunteers, and visitors. All cats and dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and current with vaccinations prior to adoption.

Our felines enjoy free-roam dwellings outfitted specifically for cats and kittens, some of which have special needs. Integrated wall shelving provides vertical space and enrichment, while generous window space offers views to the outdoors and to other interior rooms. To accommodatethose with specific diet requirements, chronic medical conditions, and those who are FIV and/or FeLV positive, individual suites offer free-roam space and eliminate the need for those animals to be in cages. We continue to look for ways to improve our campus environment in order to best serve the animals under our care.

The Humane Society of Cobb County provides education about humane and responsible animal guardianship through programs and community outreach and offers various resources to those in need. With the assistance of dedicated volunteers and generous supporters, our programs continue to make a positive difference in the lives of animals.
