AOB Vision: Children see themselves as readers, who use their written and visual literacy skills to navigate a complex world and define their own future.

Our flagship program consists of author and illustrator school visits. Presentations vary widely, depending on the author or illustrator, school setting, and book content. Regardless of the format, each participating student receives a signed book and the author’s or illustrator’s other titles are added to the classroom and school libraries. We reach students at every age level and every reading level from preK through high school. We are deliberate in our efforts to bring in authors and illustrators with whom students can connect as role models. According to the Cooperative Children's Book Center, in 2018, 22% of the titles published in the US were written by authors of color4. Each year, at least 40% of AOB's participating authors and illustrators are people of color.

During presentations, authors and illustrators interact with classes; while signing personal copies for each student, classroom and school library, they engage in one-on-one conversations with students, creating personal connections that are inspiring the next generation of storytellers. In addition, we coordinate book groups, extension activities in conjunction with select events, and maintain Little Free Libraries and “book nooks” in several Washington DC, schools.

AOB serves schools at which at least 50%--in most cases over 85%-- of the children are entitled to free or reduced price lunch.

Since its inception in November 2010, An Open Book has given over 70,000 books to children, their classroom and their school libraries.
