In the Beginning
AAWL & SPCA was founded in 1971 by a group of concerned animal lovers led by Amanda Blake, best known as 'Miss Kitty' on the television program, Gunsmoke.
Over the past 40+ years, it has become the leading, No-Kill animal welfare organization in the Valley, and has been named The Best Place to Adopt by many publications and customer surveys.
The campus includes a beautiful new Adoption Center, a recently expanded shelter clinic and a low-cost full service veterinary clinic which is open to the public. The Foster Department takes in almost 2,000 underage puppies and kittens each year. Behavior experts provide shelter animals with exercise, socialization and behavior protocols every day and also offer obedience classes to the public. The Education Department offers the most extensive and highly acclaimed programs for children of all ages. And, more than 450 volunteers are involved in every aspect of the organization’s lifesaving work.
Why We Are Different
As a no-kill shelter, AAWL & SPCA rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes almost 5,000 dogs and cats each year. Not only do we spay/neuter each animal before adoption, we provide them with microchips, vaccinations and the only POST ADOPTION services in the Valley --- our Best Buddy Program.
We have free medical and behavior helplines that adopters can use for the first 30 days after adoption to address any issues or problems that might develop – giving them total peace of mind in transitioning the pet into their home. If necessary, both after adoption and for their lifetime, the pet can be brought to our low-cost clinic for veterinary services. And, if necessary, any animal adopted from AAWL can be returned to us at any point in its life. No other organization offers this adoption guarantee and lifetime support.
