In 1917 one of your founders mentioned to some friends that there was a family living in their car at the edge of town. They were out of money. The children were hungry and needed decent clothes to attend school. These ladies got their resources together and helped them out. They soon noticed other people who were living below the poverty level, and began sewing for the children and gathering food and good used clothing from friends and neighbors. Along the way, a group of churches became involved. In the 1940's the group received funding from the Community Chest, a forerunner of United Fund and our present United Way.

Our Mission is to help families and individuals who have temporary subsistence needs by giving them free groceries and clothing.
