DONATE TO SUPPORT BELFAST GIRLS!
AMERICAN PREMIERE OF BELFAST GIRLS OPENING MAY 16TH IN CHICAGO-Award-winning writer Jaki McCarrick dramatizes Irish history: On the cusp of a great societal revolution, five street women orphaned by the Irish Famine embark on a journey of love, betrayal and adventure, hopeful they will find a fresh start in a new land.
EMPOWERMENT: Artemisia was founded in 2011 out of a passion for female-driven stories. Despite the gains that women have made all over the world, men still take the lead in theatre as writers, actors, directors and producers. Artemisia seeks to reverse the trend by always producing theatre where women drive the story as producers, directors, writers, actors and designers. Through great female-driven plays, Artemisia empowers women and challenges the audience with unique and unusual perspectives on the identities of women.
ENGAGEMENT: An annual fall festival of exciting new female-driven plays from all over the world is offered to Chicago every September. From these plays Artemisia’s amazing audience picks one that will be fully produced during the next theatre season. Special Thanks to our 2013 Fall Festival Audience for choosing award-winning writer Jaki McCarrick's BELFAST GIRLS!
Engagement, empowerment, and great female-driven stories; that’s what Artemisia is all about.
DONATE TO SUPPORT WOMEN'S VOICES IN THEATRE
WOMEN IN CHICAGO THEATRE: Belfast Girls, which opens at the Den Theatre in Chicago on May 16th, is written, produced, directed, acted, designed, staged managed, assistant directed and run by a team of all female theatre artists.
ENDORSEMENTS: "Artemisia produces plays that empower women and the city and country need more theatres with this focus." - David Zak, Chicago Stage Standard
"The plays that Julie and her team select are of uniformly high quality and bring to Chicago audiences the works of a number of writers new to this community. The aesthetic values of both the productions and readings are uniformly excellent, far surpassing those of many other small local companies. And the efforts that Julie makes to involve her audiences in every step of the play selection and production process are truly groundbreaking, and have already resulted in a core audience that is as passionate about the company’s work as Julie is." Steve Scott, director & producer, Goodman Theatre
