Artspace

A nonprofit organization

Since founded in 1980, Artspace has developed 265 affordable housing units and over 115,000 sq. ft. of affordable commercial space through five mixed-use projects on the industrial west side of Salt Lake City. These projects have led the way in demonstrating how underutilized, low-income industrial areas can be redeveloped to encourage a residential core and promote the arts.

Artspace projects promote community development by building vibrant affordable housing and commercial spaces in low-income census tracts. The over 20 nonprofits and 30 small businesses that operate out of our buildings bring activity and critical services to underserved areas. Some of our tenants include organizations that provide employment and vocational training for the developmentally disabled, art and media classes for low-income youth, advocacy for low-income housing and social services and various environmental advocacy groups.

Artspace combined projects are over 99% leased, showing a great need for more development of safe, affordable housing and work space. Low to moderate income households need affordable housing that is transit-oriented and close to employment centers. Nonprofits and small businesses need affordable space adjacent to other organizations to facilitate collaboration and programming efficiencies. The creative class needs affordable spaces designed for their unique work. The community needs artists and organizations that are a dynamic force for revitalization.
