Asian Pacific Community in Action

Asian Pacific Community in Action is as a grassroots non-profit agency created to ensure culturally responsive health information and health services for low-income Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.  Established in 2002, APCA remains the only organization in Arizona that provides comprehensive health services specifically for these communities.  APCA also serves refugees from Asia and other continents.  APCA’s mission is to provide services, advocacy and education for diverse communities resulting in a healthier and more empowered population overall.

Last year we have spent at least $246,186 for the following services:

• 1000 community members to receive free hepatitis B screening
• Purchased 300 cassettes for glucose/cholesterol testing
• Referred 300 individuals for free flu vaccinations
• Assisted 240 families with applications for AHCCCS (Medicaid), KidsCare, and SNAP benefits
• Offered cultural competency training to healthcare providers and emphasized the importance of using trained medical interpreters to provide quality care service for their monolingual patient
• Educated more than 300 community members about their right to have a trained medical interpreter in a health care setting
• Helped more than 100 women receive breast cancer screenings, one of whom was eventually diagnosed with early stage breast cancer

These funds will be used to help cover the costs of our educational programs and on-going projects specifically to serve the needs of the rapidly growing Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. As much as we’ve accomplished together, there is still much work to be done.
