Imagine a child at school being embarrassed by their clothes. This may lead to poor self-esteem with a negative impact on academic success and attendance. New clothes go a long way towards boosting a child's self-confidence.
For many children, Operation School Bell® gives them the unique joy of many potential firsts such as: receiving new clothes; having properly fitting shoes; owning a new warm coat; or having their very own grooming supplies. With the basic needs of warm and adequate clothing met, children can then focus on their education, academic achievements and have a much greater chance for future success.
Children in need are identified by Ada County school personnel and are transported by them to our Philanthropic Center. There, the children are given one-on-one attention by an Assistance League® volunteer "personal shopper." Students "go shopping" for brand NEW clothing and go home with a big bag and big smiles.
Since opening in 1990, Operation School Bell® has dressed in excess of 50,000 students. Each child receives:
•two pair of jeans, or sweat pants
•a winter coat
•two tee shirts
•six pair of underwear
•six pair of socks
•a hygiene kit containing personal items
•a gift-card for a new pair of shoes to be redeemed at a local shoe store
•a book of their choice
•mittens and a hat
Your heart would warm to see how excited and happy they are as they get back on the bus with their classmates. Their teachers and families have sent many thank you letters and notes expressing their gratitude for this program.
The needs in our community continue to grow. During the 2014-15 school year, we clothed 3500 children and expect that number to rise in 2016. The children of Ada County need your help today.
