Testimonials

The Atlantic Alano Club has been just as critical to my recovery as the 12-Step programs they host there. In my active addiction, I was convinced that nobody loved me or cared about me because I was "just some addict." At the Atlantic Alano Club, I found people who shared my struggle and found a way out. These people didn't just welcome me, they WANTED me, just as I was. I know when I am at the AAC, I can be my genuine, authentic, real self, and I have a family to share my struggles, and more importantly, my victories with. I have a home. RB, Anaheim/Long Beach

When I was struggling with addiction I didn't know where to turn. I attended my first 12 Step Meeting at another 12 Step meeting location, but I did not feel comfortable sharing my truth as a member of the LGBTQ+ Community. I met someone at that meeting who attended 12 Step Meetings at the Atlantic Alano Club. He told me that I will be welcome there and will be able to find a fellowship that will welcome me and mentor me in my recovery. That was in March of 2007. In the beginning of my recovery I struggled. I struggling with homelessness and lived in a hotel and was unemployable. The Atlantic Alano Club was a safe place for me to continue to attend 12 Step Meetings and get the help and mentoring I needed. In June of 2007 I took my last drink and drug and have been sober ever since. 14 years later I have a career, I am a home owner and The Atlantic Alano Club was a big part of that journey, -BW, Long Beach, CA

I moved to Long Beach in 2017 at 9 years sober, unsure of how my recovery would change in a new city. I'm so grateful to have found The Atlantic Alano Club, which has been at the absolute center of my recovery program for the last 4 ½ years. I've found more than a group of friends and supporters - I've truly found a place where I can be myself, share openly, and help others. The AAC is a special place, and it should forever have a home in Long Beach to support other LGBTQ+ folks like me for years to come. JH, Long Beach, CA

My sobriety began in the early '80s, before the Atlantic Alano Club was founded. At that time, most of our meetings were held at churches, we socialized at restaurants after the meetings, and we rented halls for social events. It was difficult to find spaces where LGBTQ+ people were welcome. It was also difficult for those in need to find us. When the club opened, we had created a place of our own, a visible place where others in the community could find recovery. The Atlantic Alano Club has made a big difference in my life, and in the lives of countless others over the last 35-plus years.
