Sister Cities Int'l was created at President Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1956 White House conference on citizen diplomacy, where he envisioned an organization that could be a champion for peace and prosperity by fostering bonds between people from different communities around the world. By forming relationships, he reasoned that people of different cultures could celebrate and appreciate their differences and build partnerships that would lessen the chances of new conflicts.
B-CS Sisters Cities was established in 1989 to promote cultural understanding, fellowship, and communication between our cities and our first sister city, Kazan, Russia. However, Kazan has been moved to an Emeritus Status, as well as our second Sister City (ZuaZua, Mexico). We have 4 sister cities at present. They are: Bastogne-Belgium; Greifswald-Germany, Torun-Poland and Salamanca-Mexico.
The B-CS Sister Cities Association is affiliated with both the Texas Sister Cities Association and the International Sister Cities Association.
Our Programs include home-and-away student ambassador exchange visits of 7-10 days, facilitating adult visits for culture, the arts, and fostering economic exchange.
High school students and adults in Bryan-College Station who have participated in and supporting this program have described it as a wonderful learning experience both hosting students and adults from our sister cities and traveling to our sister cities to be hosted by them. Terms like life changing; making life-long friends from another part of the world and culture, and I would do it all again are commonly expressed by many students and adults alike.
