Once upon a time we asked Google to show us images of "disability" and "wheelchairs"...As we patiently waited those long milliseconds for the search results, our hearts were hopeful that we would find something positive and real.
Little did we know that what we were about to see would ignite a little spark in our brain and fuel CHANGE!
The image results showed the two stereotypes society has in regards to people with disabilities: PITIFUL/ILL/HOPELESS or INSPIRATIONAL/SUPERHUMAN
What about REAL? Contrary to popular beliefs, people with disabilities can also live happy and successful lives, are active members of their communities, and make important contributions to society.
Sooo...BACKBONES decided to use positive photographs and tell stories that will challenge current perceptions of the lives of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and begin to break down multiple barriers for those with disabilities. This visual storytelling will introduce YOU to the accomplishments of many people after spinal cord injury and paralysis.
We picked 22 photographers and matched them with 22 individuals with SCI across the country. They are currently working to create photo essays that will travel and exhibit in Chicago (National Museum of Health and Medicine Chicago- June 29, 2013); Portland (MercyCorps- Fall 2013); Los Angeles (TBD); New York (TBD); and beyond!!!
Let's challenge current stereotypes of the lives of people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) change views leading to better access to housing, employment, education and recreation for people with disabilities! What can you do?!?
MAKE A DONATION and help us reach $5,000!
Ensure this traveling show reaches cities across America!
...and, tell your friends, of course..!!!
