The focus of Bakersfield Homeless Center is on helping the most vulnerable in our community, the children who are trying to survive in the poorest sections of our county. If we did not reach out to help these women and children they would not have another alternative. We believe that children do not belong sleeping in cars, motels or streets. Together, we can continue making a difference in our community. We believe it's good and right to invest our time and resources in our clients.
The Bakersfield Homeless Center is the only 174 bed homeless shelter for women, children and families in Kern County. On average, BHC has 100 children who sleep at the center every night.
BHC operates the only state licensed child care facility (Discovery Depot) operating in a homeless center in the State of California. Discovery Depot allows our clients the security of knowing their children are safely taken care of as they seek the services needed to get them back on their feet. Homeless children often do not have a chance to experience quality child care and are at risk for abuse, neglect, and exploitation because of their precarious situation. Discovery Depot allows for the children to catch up developmentally, socially and emotionally.
