About Us: Building a Brighter Future

The Bakersfield Police Activities League (BPAL) has been a cornerstone of hope and opportunity in Southeast Bakersfield since 1994. Founded by police officers and concerned citizens, BPAL works to create a safer, stronger community by empowering at-risk youth and fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the families we serve.

Our Mission

We guide at-risk youth through quality educational and athletic programs, providing healthy alternatives to drugs, alcohol, gangs, and violence. By offering mentorship, coaching, and positive role modeling, we help children become responsible, caring, and successful individuals.

What We Do

BPAL offers a wide range of programs designed to inspire, educate, and support youth:

  • Sports Programs: Boxing, soccer, jiu jitsu, and basketball leagues build teamwork, discipline, and confidence.
  • Educational Initiatives: Reading programs and social development classes foster academic and personal growth.
  • Mentorship and Community Engagement: Police officers and community volunteers mentor youth, bridging gaps and building trust.

Why It Matters

For decades, BPAL has been a safe haven for underserved children and teens, providing opportunities they might not otherwise experience. Many of the youth we serve face economic hardships and challenging family dynamics, but at BPAL, they find a space filled with encouragement, support, and the tools to dream beyond their circumstances.

Join Us in Making a Difference

At BPAL, we believe that every child deserves a chance to succeed. By investing in our programs, you’re not just supporting an organization—you’re contributing to a movement to uplift the next generation and shape the future of Bakersfield into one filled with potential, opportunity, and hope.

Who We Are

Bakersfield Police Activities League, BPAL, is a non-profit charitable organization formed in 1994 by Police officers and concerned citizens. It is one of the Police Department's approaches to juvenile delinquency prevention.
BPAL is about cops and kids. Police officers and other community members volunteer their time as coaches, mentors, role models, and friends to children in our community. BPAL provides positive self-esteem, mutual trust, and respect. BPAL targets at risk youth in high crime neighborhoods. Bakersfield PAL is a chapter member of the state organization California Police Activities League.

The BPAL program provides youth from some of the under-served, lesser developed neighborhoods in the city and county the opportunity to learn about healthier lifestyles, to participate in physical training, recreation and team and individual sports. Youth are provided instruction in and play basketball, boxing, dodge ball and Soccer. Boxing instruction and training is made available on a year-round basis. Some of these are intramural in nature; while others involve uniformed play in leagues and in invitational competitions. Sports and recreation activities are supplemented by organized instruction in healthy eating, proper nutrition and avoidance of STD & substance use.
