As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We often take for granted, the opportunities and resources to achieve an education. In line with our mission to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of our community’s youth - regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or disability –the Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Association seeks to provide annual scholarship opportunities to high school students with help from community leaders and organizations like yourself.  In 2015 for example, the Sikh Women’s Association awarded a $5,000 scholarship to a Ridgeview High School student who achieved a 4.0+ grade point average and acceptance into a U.C., but needed the remainder of the funds to get through her first year of college.

In our daily lives, many of us take for granted, basic personal hygiene items like soap, shampoo and deodorant. For others, donations such as these help children attend school feeling fresh and accepted in their environments. Last year, the Sikh Women’s Association organized a community-wide drive to supply the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter with personal hygiene items, clothing and books for children. The Association additionally took children from the shelter to watch a movie at the theatres; an opportunity most of these children experienced for the very first time.
