Port Discovery is unique among educational and cultural resources in Maryland. Our philosophy, based on years of research in neuroscience and education, promotes experiential learning as the essential ingredient for optimal social, emotional, and intellectual child development. Interactive programs and exhibits engage children’s minds and physical senses simultaneously, allowing them to learn the way they learn best – through play.

At Port Discovery, purposeful play lays the foundation for creative thinking, problem solving, and collaboration – 21st century learning skills that are critical for success in our fast-paced, interconnected world. Our safe, nurturing, inclusive environment fosters family bonding and promotes community connections across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic lines. Our dedicated staff includes community child experts and advocates, bringing innovative learning experiences to children and serving as an educational resource for parents and teachers.

Every year, Port Discovery serves over 260,000 visitors. Of these, approximately 40,000 receive free and discounted visits through our School and Family Access program, Afterschool program, and Discover Days/Discover Me Days programs for children with special needs. Through programs such as these, Port Discovery is committed to making its educational enrichment programs available to those who need it most, but could not otherwise afford to attend.
