ABOUT US
At Band Together, we bring communities together to strengthen the important work of nonprofits, which live music as our stage. Founded in 2001 in the aftermath of September 11th, Band Together has raised millions of dollars for nonprofits. We do that by producing the Southeast's largest annual charity concert, The Mighty Giveback, which ranks among the longest-running in the country.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
On September 12th, 2001, five friends—Phil and Shellie Gruber, Danny Rosin, Tom Lyon and Skip Mangum—got together in an attempt to digest and possibly find a way to respond to the terrors that had taken place the previous day. None of us were firemen. And because we lived in Raleigh, NC, far from where the horrific tragedies occurred, we knew onsite assistance would not be an option. There were no existing, trusted charitable outlets that we could put our giving efforts into. Nonetheless, we had a deep sense that we could do—that we had to do—something to help.
Over the next several weeks, our small huddle of friends brought together a group of more than 40 young business leaders from across the Triangle to raise funds and awareness for the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. We created an organization called Band Together for Our Heroes. In October 2001, through the collective efforts of a community of volunteers, we produced a four-band event that brought more than 1000 people together, raising over $60,000 for NYC and DC Family Relief efforts.
In the ensuing years, Band Together formed a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Since then, we have supported over 150 nonprofit organizations in the Raleigh-Durham area (known as the Triangle) and hosted Grammy award winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musicians.
HOW WE DO IT
Partnership Philanthropy is when two or more organizations come together to combine forces for the good of the community. Through our partnerships, we help our nonprofit impact partners realize their goals through collaborative fundraising and a shared platform to bring attention to their cause in front of a live concert audience - an audience that may be entirely new to what their organization does for the community.
Each year, Band Together selects one or more different nonprofits in our area to partner with and improve our community. Our annual nonprofit impact partner selection is a detailed and thorough process that vets the needs, goals, opportunities, sustainability, and financials of potential 501(c)3 organizations who apply.
