When you look into the eyes of a child, what do you see?

Do you see hope? Confidence? Trust? Or do you see defeat? Fear? Anxiety?

Many times, the only difference lies in whether that child has had someone in their life that makes them feel loved, capable, and special. For nearly fifty years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hampden County has been matching kids with exceptional volunteers who know how to make them feel special. And it works.

Compared to children who are not in our program, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

   • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs

   • 52% less likely to skip school

   • 37% less likely to skip a class

   • 33% less likely to hit someone

   • more confident of their performance in schoolwork

   • get along better with their families

As important as these findings are, they only hint at the transformative potential that lies in forming even just one successful Big/Little match.

In each child lies the hope for a better world, and with your help, we will continue to unlock that potential for hundreds of kids throughout Hampden County every year.
