Beat the Streets of Baltimore has a 30 day challenge to raise $10,500.00 for our STEM/Wrestling Camp at Morgan State University.
Beat the Streets of Baltimore (BTS) was founded in 2012, partnering with Baltimore City public/charter schools to organize after-school amateur wrestling programs. The wrestling programs are used as a ‘hook’ to engage participants in their academic careers and to steer participants toward tutoring and mentoring opportunities made available by BTS.
During the program's first year, we realized that many of our student-athletes could not afford to attend summer camps. We believe that all students should have the opportunity to have enriching summer experiences regardless of their socio-economic background. As a result, BTS came up with an innovative idea to develop a camp for students from low income families that combined STEM-research, amateur wrestling and math development.
In 2013, BTS founded the first ever STEM-sports camp at Morgan State University. The 11 day residential, summer camp served 80 children from Baltimore City Public Schools. Students were provided with daily wrestling, mathematics and scientific method instruction and were provided time to develop science fair projects. The highlight of the camp was a one day clinic by Jordan Burroughs, a gold medal winning wrestler on Team USA. At the conclusion of the camp, students showcased their wrestling skills in a tournament.
Several students submitted science projects in the 2014 Morgan State University Science-Mathematics-Engineering Fair. Four students from the summer camp won first place in regional science fair. One student won the overall competition and advance to the Intel International Science Fair. (See video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3K0ioVk3bY)
The 2014 BTS STEM/Wrestling camp designed to include 35 hours of STEM research, 35 hours of wrestling highlighted with training with the Olympic and NCAA Champions/All-Americans, and 10 hours of focused math development (quadratic and linear equations) supported by pre- and post assessments.
During the camp students will be designing STEM projects to be entered into the 2015 Morgan State University Regional Science Fair. Students will be selected to work in small groups to research some very interesting topics that include studies in neurology, engineering, material science, chemistry and nutrition. Students will be utilizing modern materials and technology such as polyurethane foam, impact sensors, high density foams, electrolytes, 3D printing, prototyping or speedometers.
Our team of scientist and engineers has some innovative ideas where we will attempt to solve modern problems, and our students will be our biggest asset in helping us accomplish our goals! In 2005, Mark Zuckerberg changed the way the world communicates and it all started with an idea. Over the next two months, we will tackle some problems and get some positive results.
