The sisters first came to the Madison area in the early 1950s, started a high school for girls at the request of the Roman Catholic bishop, and then started an ecumenical retreat and conference center in the 1960s. Through this journey, they decided it was in the best interests of their mission and community become an ecumenical monastic community - the first in North America. The monastic community is open to women of any Christian tradition, and there are opportunities for other commitment levels of monastic life. There are also opportunities to worship with our Sunday Assembly community, or become an oblate with men and women from all sorts of Christian traditions. The sisters have a strong ethic of caring for the earth, building one of the greenest buildings in the country at the LEED-certified platinum level, and restoring over 95 acres of farmland to prairie in order to reduce the runoff of pollutants.
