Berkeley Chess School

Through the medium of chess, we teach critical thinking, problem solving, mental discipline, how to deal with winning and losing, and other skills which affect learning in the classroom. Chess is fun whether played competitively or for recreation. It can be learned quickly and easily, especially by children.

BCS students have won many competitions, including first place in both state and national competitions.

We are able to make chess relevant and exciting to the next generation because community members like you support our mission and help us achieve it every day. We need your support to continue! Your tax-deductible contribution will go directly toward strengthening our community’s intellectual vigor and quality of life by:

• Funding Chess Outreach Programs for Title I schools in Berkeley, Oakland, Richmond, and San Francisco;

• Purchasing take home chess sets for our Outreach Programs so students can practice on their own and share what they learn with their family and friends;

• Providing need-based scholarships to low-income families participating in our fee-based programs (one in five BCS students receives financial assistance and no student is ever turned away for an inability to pay);

• Helping fund travel for BCS students who qualify to represent the U.S. at the World Youth Championships.
