Imagine waking up one day and learning that you must abandon your home, your job, your friends and neighbors. You must leave now, and you might never be allowed to come back. Everything that speaks to you of home will become a ghost town. The animals you can't take with you will be shot.

That's what the people of Fukushima, Japan, have had to face when, on March 11, 2011, three reactors suffered explosions and began to melt down.

Washington, DC is just 50 miles from the Calvert Cliffs, MD reactors - the same distance the US government advised as an evacuation zone around Fukushima!

Fukushima could happen here in the US but we can prevent it.

Beyond Nuclear has launched "Freeze our Fukushimas." It's a campaign to make sure we follow the lead of Germany, Switzerland, Italy and elsewhere and begin to close down our dangerous, old nuclear power plants. We have 23 in the US exactly the same as those in Fukushima. A prolonged loss of electricity could set in motion the same drastic events.

Nobody's home town should become a sacrifice zone. We should not have to worry - as the parents from Fukushima do - about our children being exposed to deadly doses of radiation that will affect their health and their future.

That's why we are asking all our friends and supporters, known and new, to Give to the Max to Beyond Nuclear on November 9 and shut down US Fukushimas now.
