Bicycle Collective is a community resource providing a path to personal and self-reliant transportation. We operate as a group of nonprofit bike shops that refurbish bicycles donated by the thousands each year and puts them into the hands of those in need - focusing on children, newly resettled refugees and immigrants, individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, individuals recovering from substance abuse, and low-to-moderate income households.
Our work in providing independent transportation and mobility in meeting everyday needs is an integral part of the homeless services provider community and essential to building a bridge to self-reliance.
Through strong partnerships with over 60 community organizations across Utah, Bicycle Collective works to identify individuals who rely on a bicycle as their primary—and often only—means of transportation. By providing refurbished bicycles, safety equipment, and ongoing support, we empower recipients with the mobility they need to meet daily needs and pursue pathways to self-reliance.
Our work is an essential part of the homeless services provider network and plays a foundational role in building long-term, community-wide solutions to poverty and housing insecurity. In connecting people to opportunity, we help break cycles of isolation and marginalization, moving individuals closer to stability, dignity, and independence.
Mission
Bicycle Collective focuses on transportation equity and environmental sustainability.
The mission of Bicycle Collective is to promote cycling as an effective and sustainable form of transportation and recreation, and as a cornerstone of a cleaner, healthier, and safer society. The Collective provides refurbished bicycles and educational programs to the community focusing on children, low to moderate income households, newly arrived refugees, people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity, and individuals recovering from substance abuse.
History
Founded in 2002, Bicycle Collective is a community resource providing a path to personal and self-reliant transportation. We operate as a group of non profit bike shops that refurbish bicycles donated by the thousands each year and put them into the hands of those in need.
Our Work
Transportation is a formidable barrier to economic mobility.
"Access to just about everything associated with upward mobility and economic progress--jobs, quality food, and goods (at reasonable prices), healthcare, and schooling relies on the ability to get around in an efficient way, and at an affordable price." (The Atlantic)
Practical and affordable, a BIKE contributes to economic well-being, emotional stability, and physical health. It is a simple, eco-friendly transportation option.
Bicycle Collective operates numerous programs throughout Utah at three physical locations: our headquarters in Salt Lake City (est. 2002), Ogden (est. 2015), and St. George (est. 2017). At each of these locations, Bicycle Collective uses a sustainable business model that accepts donated bicycles in any condition, and then repairs, refurbishes, or recycles them. Since our inception, we have received more than 50,000 bicycles as donations and through rehabilitation and reuse, or through recycles, prevented them from ending up in the landfill. In 2025, we provided 1,222 bikes to individuals and families throughout Utah. We also recycled more than 98.7 tons of metal and 3.8 tons of rubber.
