Please Support our Worcester Area College Mentor Program

Over the last 15 years, the Worcester Area College Mentor Program has positively impacted more than 6,000 lives.  Today, nearly 700 college students, from seven colleges and universities, mentor a Greater Worcester child facing adversity.  While we are very proud of the reach and impact of this program, which is believed to be the largest of its kind in the country, we need new financial support to sustain the number of children being served.  New child safety standards set by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America require that we reduce the caseloads of our match support staff.  In order to be in compliance and sustain our level of service, we need new financial resources.

Big Brothers Big Sisters… Changing Lives for the Better

Compared to children who are not in our program, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

• 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs

• 52% less likely to skip school

• 37% less likely to skip a class

• 33% less likely to hit someone

• more confident of their performance in schoolwork

• get along better with their families

As important as these findings are, they only hint at the transformative potential that lies in forming even just one successful Big/Little match.

The College of the Holy Cross Making a BIG Difference

While countless students from Holy Cross have volunteered as mentors during the period 1963 to 2000, the agency’s partnership with the college changed with the launch of the John’s Brothers after school site based program in 2000.  Today more than 200 Holy Cross student athletes and more than 70 students from the College’s SPUD Program volunteer as mentors for our agency.  The Holy Cross student body has been integral to the enormous impact we are having on at risk children in the city of Worcester.

Donate Today

The Amelia Peabody Foundation, which has been providing our agency funding for the College Mentor Program for 10 years, has challenged us and our former Bigs with a matching gift.  If we can raise $20,000 this year to support our College Mentor Program, they will give us an additional $20,000.  These funds have never been more critical to sustaining the service we offer and being in a position to grow.

It’s not just a donation. It’s an investment in a child’s future.
