Preservation of Big Sable Point Lighthouse is an on-going task. We have some major maintenance issues and restoration work that needs to be completed over the next several years so that we can continue to fulfill our mission of preserving this lighthouse.

The urgent need at the Big Sable Lighthouse is a new roof over the Keepers Quarters. We will replace the red asphalt roof with a new red asphalt roof. The present roof is over 20 years old and SPLKA is experiencing many problems with the roof. SPLKA has had a professional roofing company patch the roof several times over the last 5 years.  The patched roof has prevented major interior damage to this point. The roofing company has advised us that this defiantly will be the roofs last winter.  The old roof will need to be completely torn off and a new roof installed by a professional roofing contractor to insure dry conditions in the Keepers Quarters.

Scope of the work for the shingle area will include:

Remove decorative wood ridge and eave boards, which will be refinished before they are reinstalled back up on the roof.

Remove the existing roofing, flashings and edge metal.

Install new drip edge, two rows of ice and water shield at all eave edges.

New metal and ice and water shields in all the valleys.

New red shingles to closely resemble the existing red shingle roof.

Re-install all wooden ridge and eave boards.

Scope of work for the three (3) low slope areas:

Remove existing roofs.

Install 1/2” recovery board and new 60 mil rubber roofs.

New edge metal and flashing

Contractor will also:

Protect Keepers Quarters and surrounding landscaping.

Haul all demo to approved landfill.

Once again the reason for the new roof is to protect the interior of the lighthouse. Right now we are experiencing several small leaks and plaster repairs have been done to the inside of the lighthouse. The new roof is needed so that SPLKA doesn’t constantly have to repair the plaster ceilings and walls. The new roof is vital to maintain and preserve this landmark historic structure. SPLKA must also offer and provide a safe and dry place for our resident keepers who volunteer their time to man our lights in the summer. The new roof is keeping with our mission to preserve the Big Sable Lighthouse and our lease to maintain the structure.
