Since 1977, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra has created meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers ("Bigs") and at-risk children ("Littles"), ages 3 through 18, in El Dorado County. We now serve El Dorado and Nevada Counties including Lake Tahoe & Zepher Cove, NV in which there are approximately 350 children who benefit from the guidance of a trusted and caring mentor annually. These mentors are friends and champions who serve as a positive role model and consistent supportive presence in these children's chaotic and unstable lives. Children are more likely to succeed if they avoid interactions with the juvenile justice system, violence, drugs and alcohol. Bigs leave a lasting impact on the lives of their Little, and help shape who they grow up to be. A recent survey of former Littles revealed that the life-changing effects of a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor lasts far beyond the scope of childhood.
