For 56 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota has been creating mentoring relationships that help kids feel seen, supported, and empowered. By pairing youth with caring mentors who share their interests and offer guidance through life’s challenges, the organization makes a big impact in the community. Thanks to your support, every match has the tools and encouragement needed to grow and succeed.
Your gift directly fuels real change. It helps kids build confidence, improve in school, and explore new possibilities for their future. Every donation ensures that matches like Rachel, Yang, and Journi have the resources and support they need to thrive.
Rachel Schuneman and Yang Koua Lo, both doctors at CentraCare, were matched with Journi through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota. Rachel joined first in 2022, and after seeing the connection she built with Journi, Yang joined in on the fun a year later. Now, the match is the 2025 Central Minnesota Big Duo of the Year.
Together, they’ve helped Journi explore new experiences. From fishing, trying new foods, and even meeting a French-Hmong pastry chef, these moments have sparked curiosity and confidence in Journi. They’ve also supported her academically by providing extra help with books and encouragement when school gets tough. Most importantly, Rachel and Yang have helped Journi learn to advocate for herself through positive communication. That boost in confidence has helped her speak up, set goals, and believe in her ability to succeed - Journi currently dreams of becoming a cosmetologist.
And the impact of your support goes far beyond one match. A 2024 Harvard study found that Littles in BBBS programs are:
· 20% more likely to pursue post-secondary education and training
· Earn 15% more over their lifetimes
· Close the income gap with their mentors by two-thirds
Your generosity makes this possible for hundreds of kids across Central Minnesota. Their lives are being transformed through mentorship, opportunity, and the belief that their potential is worth defending.
