YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS

INVEST IN OUR YOUTH TO INVEST IN OUR FUTURE

Your donation helps us provide comprehensive, high quality after school and summer programming to youth in underserved San Diego communities.

STEAM Experiences Camp held at the City Heights/Weingart Library. Students are learning from Associate Executive Director, Blanca Lozano about what it means to be part of a community, and to be an advocate for self and others.

Our commitment to the BIPOC community runs deep, and empowering through youth education is one of our core beliefs.

Learning is a lifelong endeavor that is collaborative, dynamic and holistic.

BSF's Explore Next Door Youth Enrichment Programs and SOAR (Scholastic Opportunity for Academic Readiness) Literacy Program serve to bridge the cultural and financial differences of disadvantaged San Diego County youth, provide tools for long-term success, and support for low income families during the after school and summer hours when parents are still at work.

Our innovative equity-focused approach to education provides comprehensive support to underserved students with the goal of closing the achievement gap for students experiencing the intersectional challenges of marginalization, poverty, and/or language barriers. By meeting children where they are, and employing coherent learning solutions that support the whole child—culturally, academically, and socio-emotionally—our programs are designed to empower student success in the classroom and beyond.

Since 2020, funders like you have enabled BSF to serve over 1,700 students, families, and businesses in San Diego!

Our curriculum is designed to encourage hands-on experiential learning,

in-depth multicultural understanding, and mindful self reflection and growth.

Program topics include:

  • Mindfulness-based behavioral health
  • STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math)
  • Multicultural awareness
  • Community engagement
  • Outdoors experiences
  • Environmental stewardship
  • Arts & theater
  • Career pathways
  • Reading & writing
  • Local history & culture
  • Farms & food system education
  • Mental & physical health
  • Financial literacy

TESTIMONIALS

"New experiences from going to a farm, to being out on the ocean, this camp was incredible! Not just the field trips, but the learning too. When my kid came home & showed me the money spending exercise they did, taught by someone who was once homeless, I was impressed & thankful - school doesn't even teach this stuff! New friendships. Awesome staff who accept each kid for who they are." - San Marcos Thrive Outside camp, Palomar College.

"Joys and knowledge that kids haven't learned in school. I was surprised when my son said he learn about financial and investment. Great topic."

"They learn so much and have amazing learning experiences! We are so grateful for this program!"

"The crew was AMAZING, understanding and a level the kids understood. They were hard at work but gentle at the same time. I got to chaperone a field trip and got a chance to see them work. It was a diverse group of kids and they were loved. My boy wants this same camp next year!"

"My child's life was enriched with meeting new friends and caring passionate staff. My child loves to write and enjoyed reading the book she wrote during camp to the family. My child was proud to author and illustrate her book." - It's Lit! Summer Camp, Valencia Park Elementary
