On April 27th, 62 tornadoes ripped across the state of Alabama, leaving destruction across 1202 miles. Over 7,300 structures were destroyed; 15,700 additional structures were damaged statewide. Two EF-4 tornadoes and an EF-3 tornado crossed through the Greater Birmingham area, leaving destruction in their wake in several communities.

Habitat Birmingham began disaster recovery on April 28th, and continues to repair and rebuild homes for families and individuals who suffered loss in the storms. While recovery was still underway in the area, another tornado tore through the city on January 23, 2012. Habitat is accepting applications from those in need following the latest storm.

Habitat Birmingham, however, is not forgetting the overall housing needs of the community. It is committed to continuing buidling new homes, repairing existing homes and helping stabilize communities by purchasing and rehabilitating foreclosed homes in the community. 153 families benefitted from Habitat's various construction programs in 2011, 20 of these across the globe. 40 of these families were impacted by the storms.
