Founded in 1951, the Birmingham International Center (BIC) serves as a clearinghouse for intercultural education  and international economic development across the state of Alabama.  As one of the three key services BIC provides, its in-school multicultural programs (Arts-in-Education) expand children’s international knowledge and build greater understanding of a global society.

How will our children learn about other cultures with enrichment programs being cut in schools throughout Alabama?  How will we compete in a global economy without an appreciation and understanding of other cultures?  Who will provide the educational material and training needed to teach about the diversity of people throughout our community and the world?  Who will help our children compete for good jobs not with children from Indiana, but children from India, Brazil and all over the world?

Through its work in schools and classrooms, BIC contributes to education reform and cultural awareness for the US and its partner nations.  Its education programs emphasize the critical importance of developing mutual understanding and respect, and building US leadership abroad. BIC's commitment to global education is evident in its record of success, the 100,000+ children served each year, and the corporate and educational partners with which it works.

Funding from Alabama Gives will be used for our award-winning Arts- in-Education program to schools in Alabama.

Birmingham International Center’s Vision is to promote mutual understanding between cultures and link Alabama’s companies and communities to global opportunities, leadership and world affairs.

BIC’s Mission is to become Alabama’s ‘go-to’ center for combining theory with practice among international business development activities, global relationship building, intercultural competency and cultural training.
