“I have nothing to fear; and here my story ends.

My troubles are all over, and I am at home.”

This quote from the last page of author Anna Sewell’s book Black Beauty is the foundation of our mission. For 40 years we have lived this dream, rescuing thousands of animals from cruelty, neglect, and exploitation.

Here at Black Beauty Ranch, we are dedicated to helping our primate residents live their best lives in sanctuary. This year, our goal is to raise $5,000 on Giving Day for Apes. Your donations will help us provide our current resident population with high quality care including nutritious diets, veterinary care, husbandry, habitat improvements and dynamic enrichment. Not only should animals be free from pain, disease, fear, chronic stress, and hunger, but they could flourish within enriched healthy environments that encourage a diversity of natural species-appropriate behaviors, including appropriate social interactions.  We maintain the viewpoint that animals should not just survive but thrive.

Our Mission:  To provide a lifelong safe haven for animals who have been rescued from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Our Story:  Black Beauty Ranch is a world-renowned animal sanctuary in Murchison, Texas, USA. The ranch was founded in 1979 by author and animal advocate Cleveland Amory. With over 1,400 acres, it is home to more than 600 domestic and exotic animals representing 40 different species, many of whom have been rescued from near-death situations such as slaughter houses, biomedical research laboratories, and trophy hunting ranches. Others have been rescued from roadside zoos or were former victims of the exotic pet trade. Still others came from public lands where they were threatened with extermination by the federal government. Bison and cattle, horses and burros, exotic deer and apes, reptiles and tigers: all have permanent, safe homes at Black Beauty Ranch.

2024 SpotlightValentino!

Valentino's soulful eyes won him the spotlight during this year's Giving Day for Apes!  Valentino came to Black Beauty Ranch from the Center for Gibbon Studies after being separated from his mother when she overgroomed his nose to the point of deformity.  This obsessive behavior by his mother is typically a result of wild animals being held captive in small enclosures without proper stimulation.  Now, Valentino spends his days swinging around his habitat enjoying the freedom to express his natural behaviors, thriving each and every day.
