WE CARE ABOUT BLIND  PEOPLE.

A caller with a too common story

Her voice quivered as she said into the phone, “I’m 35 and going blind and I’m scared. What can I do?”

Luckily, her call was to Blindconnect where we are prepared to deal with the fear of blindness by sharing our personal story of living with blindness.  We could speak  authoritatively about appropriate and helpful resources and be a good listener in the caller’s time of need.   She seemed grateful until . . .

we told her that there are no services for blind people aged 22-55 in Nevada unless they are planning to return to work.

“I can’t even function in my home,” she said. “How can I go back to work?  I need to know how to be blind.”

The actions Blindconnect is taking

We are currently fundraising to open Angela’s House which will be the first blindness skills training center in Nevada.
This person-centered intensive training opportunity will feature daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, money and home management; orientation and mobility (cane travel and use of public transit); Braille; technology; self-advocacy; and communication skills.  Angela’s House
will fill this gap in blindness services.

It is important to know that Blindconnect, a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit, receives no federal, state, or local government funding.
We rely on grants and donations to maintain our services within the community.  And we have a measurable goal
– to open Angela’s House within the next three years.  Your help is needed!

What we’re doing right now

Meanwhile, in 2014, Blindconnect:

- Offered the first session of Transition2, a 90-hour blindness skills training program for those age 22-55 who are legally blind. This program is part of the Angela’s House offering.

- Offered the 4th Blind Date, a ‘dining in the dark’ experience to educate about blindness and to raise money and awareness.

 - Collaborated on the 9th Vision Forum, a one day, large-scale education and networking opportunity for blind adults

- Hosted a weekly peer support group. This program is part of the Angela’s House offering.

- Responded to more than 500 telephone calls for blindness information and referral to services.

How can your support help?

Blindconnec receives no government funding.  Donations and grants allow us to provide information, referral, and peer support services to an estimated 26,000 blind
and visually impaired persons in Southern Nevada.

Donations of all sizes are welcomed.  See details below about what your dollars will buy.     Your donation will have make a measurable difference in the life of a blind or visually impaired person.  THANKS!
