Blue Frontier Campaign was founded in 2003 as Ocean Awareness Project Over the past eight years, it has worked to support seaweed (marine grassroots) efforts at the local, regional, national and global levels, with an emphasis on bottom up organizing to bring the voice of citizen-activists into decision-making that will impact our public seas. There are now over 1,300 blue groups and agencies working on ocean and coastal conservation but too often operating in isolation, and with little coordinated effort among them. BFC's mission is to strengthen this ocean constituency through building unity, providing tools to, and enhancing public awareness of both the challenges and solutions being offered by these groups.

Each year BFC hosts the Peter Benchley Ocean Awards which honor those making significant contributions to marine conservation. We've published 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, a tool every one can use to incorporate ocean friendly practices into every day life. We publish the Blue Movement Directory, which lists over 1,300 blue groups. Every other year, BFC hosts a Blue Vision Summit, a multi-day gathering of ocean leaders from across the country. In 2011, the four-day event brought more than 400 people together for a solutions-oriented participants for 30+ panels, a Capitol Hill Ocean Day, a night of art, music and food, and more. We also sponsor 2 amazing Ocean Explorers who spread awareness by undertaking athletic feats. Margo Pellegrino is a coastal paddler who has undertaken missions from Maine to Miami and Seattle to San Diego. Roz Savage is a solo ocean rower who recently completed the Indian Ocean and became the first woman to row the "big three". All of our work is geared towards raising awareness and bringing the movement together in a more effective way.
