Better Neighborhoods Inc

Better Neighborhoods, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing in the City of Schenectady.  

We help people like Rosemary, who lives on the first floor of her duplex with her husband. Rosemary's son, his pregnant girlfriend, and their children live on the second floor of the duplex.  The City of Schenectady's Lead Program was working with the family to make the home lead-safe for the children, but the family received a code violation for a broken porch during an emergency call to the home.  Rosemary and her family do not have the resources to address the code violation.  We are providing the repairs needed to bring the home up-to-code so the Lead Program can continue their work.  While working with the family, we also learned that Rosemary's husband has mobility issues resulting from a stroke five years ago.  We are modifying the home to make it more accessible, which will make it possible for him to live more independently and safely.  Our work will ensure that the home is safe and healthy for Rosemary and her family and that they can remain in their own home and neighborhood.

More about Better Neighborhoods:  Our programs include homebuyer education and pre-purchase counseling, foreclosure prevention counseling, financial literacy services, home renovations, accessibility modification services, new home construction, and rental property management.  We serve the residents of the City of Schenectady, and we also provide pre-purchase, foreclosure prevention, and financial literacy services to the residents of Fulton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schoharie, and Schenectady counties. We were founded in 1966.  We have been a HUD-certified Housing Counseling Agency since 1973, and we are the only HUD-certified agency in Schenectady County.  Better Neighborhoods has been a NYS Homes & Community Renewal-funded Neighborhood Preservation Company since 1977.
