Books Between Kids Inc

Books Between Kids, a 501(c)(3) organization, was formed in November 2012.  Research has shown that 2 out of 3 low-income children do not have books of any kind in their homes.  Our mission is to ensure that all of Houston's children have the opportunity to be book owners.

Books Between Kids collects gently-used books from the Houston community, along with donations from Better World Books and Half Price Books. Working with HISD, elementary schools with a significant low-income population are selected.  Targeting the summer months, when access to reading material declines for these school children, our program allows each child attending these schools to select six books to keep for their own.  Children have fun selecting their books and are excited about reading them over the summer holidays.

140,000 books were distributed to more than 20,000 children this past year. Our goal for the 2014-15 school year is to grow from 32 elementary schools to 37 elementary schools.

While the majority of our books are donated and our labor is all volunteer, we do have operational costs such as rent and utilities, boxes and supplies. By contributing towards these expenses, you allow us to put our minds on gathering books and getting them ready for the children who so desperately need them.
