Mission

Established in 1915, the Boston Foundation is Greater Boston's community foundation, one of the oldest and largest community foundations in the country, with an endowment of more than $850 million. The Foundation made grants of approximately $70 million to nonprofit organizations last year. It also serves as a civic leader, convener, and sponsor of special initiatives. Its grantmaking supports a broad range of nonprofits, with a strategic focus on housing, workforce development and education--issues closely connected to the region's ability to compete in an increasingly global economy. In addition, the Foundation sponsors special initiatives, convenes people to discuss civic issues, and works in partnership with other organizations to meet community needs.

Programs

The Boston Foundation awarded approximately $70 million in grants to hundreds of organizations last year. Grants are made from Donor Advised Funds, Designated Funds and Discretionary Funds, following a rigorous process of review by Foundation staff.
