Boys Scouts of America, Laurel Highlands Council

A nonprofit organization

For over 100 years, the mission of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has been to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law through the following core principles: strengthen family relationships; foster self esteem through personal achievement; teach healthy living skills; and develop a sense of personal and community responsibility.

Tiger Cubs: A school-year program for first grade boys that stress simplicity, shared leadership, applied learning experiences about the community, and family understanding.

Cub Scouts: A family-and home-centered program for boys in the second through fifth grade (or 8, 9 and 10 year olds). Cub Scouting's emphasis is on quality programs at the local level, where the most boys and families are involved.

Boy Scouts: A program for boys 11 through 17 designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer-group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster.

Venturing: Designed for young men and women, ages 14 through 20, to gain insight into a variety of programs that offer leadership training, fitness, outdoor, and service.

Learning for Life: A co-educational program serving grades K-12 delivered in partnership with local schools, within the school setting, designed to build confidence, motivation, and self-esteem.

Career Exploring: A work-site based program for young men and women ages 14-20 years old. Businesses and community organizations match their people and program resources to the interests of youth in the community.

Scoutreach: The Council's outreach program for our areas most at-risk, disadvantaged youth, ages 8-17. The program is delivered by Council staff in areas where it is difficult to recruit and retain volunteers. Scoutreach is primarily delivered in partnership with local schools, within the school or after school setting.

Special Needs and Abilities Awareness Scouting / TrailBlazer program: TrailBlazer is delivered to Special Needs individuals, beginning at 8 years old and ranging into adulthood. The program is delivered in three facets - organizational and institutional settings; inclusive special needs units; and "traditional" Scouting units.
