It’s very likely someone you know has received a brain injury. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

More than 300,000 Nebraskan’s have suffered a brain injury of some type. Over 37,000 Nebraskans continue to live with the life-altering, disabling effects of brain injury and they often need a lifetime of resources and assistance so they can not only survive, but thrive in their personal life and their community.

More than 20 percent of returning service members are coming home changed from the invisible wounds of war - brain injury combined with PTSD

"My husband served in U.S. Army for 17 yrs undergoing five deployments in eight of those years. He was injured in Afghanistan in 2012 and was medically retired. He suffers from both TBI and PTSD.  

Last fall, I had an opportunity to attend the Women of Warriors Weekend retreat sponsored by the Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska. At the time, I went because my husband and I were having marital problems.

 I sat in a room full of other women feeling the brokenness inside me and knowing that my life and marriage had left me feeling defeated.

The very first night of the retreat, I heard so many stories that resembled mine. It’s an overwhelming feeling to know that you are not alone and that others are going through the same challenges.

The retreat offered education on traumatic brain injury and PTSD and I began to understand my husband’s journey. My compassion has strengthened and our communication has improved. Learning more about the resources available also helped motivate us to reach out for services. We have achieved so much healing in the past year. 

The women I met at the retreat continue to build me up. I have formed life-long with other 'women of warriors'.
