The foundation began in 2014 after the suicide of Brett Thomas Doussan, a friend to everyone with what we thought was a happy life and promising future. In memory of Brett and to everyone affected by depression and other mental illnesses, we extend our outreach to help raise awareness and end the stigma. We proudly support the Children's Hospital Behavioral Health Unit, the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic & Assistance Foundation, local chapters of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention), and Loyola University's Music Therapy Graduate Program.
Go to btdfoundation.org to find resources/support groups/treatment information, sign up for email updates, and register to volunteer. Also, check out our Music for the Mind Campaign page featuring musicians talking about how music has impacted their lives. Plan to join us at our annual fundraisers -- Play It FOREward golf event, Notes for Hope mini-music festival, and Battle of the Sands volleyball tournament.
Georgia B. -- I just wanted to tell you what a tremendous blessing your work is. You are helping so many. I lost a son too and can relate to your pain.
Denise T. -- Hello, I was so touched by your recent post that I would like to help or volunteer because I am a survivor. I have lost family to suicide, so I been on both sides of this horrible disease.
Mandy C. -- Hi, I know you don't know me at all but my name is Mandy and I knew Brett. As I always remember, he was the life of the party. I love that you started this foundation because some of my family struggles with mental health. My aunt is schizophrenic.
