With your support, we will:
•Create a strategic plan to assist companies with Oregon Benefits Corporation requirements •Educate companies and consumers on the positive impacts of Extended Producer Responsibility •Target new, high-impact industrial sectors, including light industry, construction, and demolition companies •Identify new sources of used materials for resale at BRING
For more than 44 years, BRING has helped people understand how the stuff we use shapes the planet we share. We have changed attitudes and behaviors towards the wasteful consumption that drives climate change, making reduce, reuse, and recycle bywords of our community. But we can do more. And we must.
Researchers recently found that, despite a growing national recycling rate, we throw away more than twice as much stuff as the EPA had calculated.
Preventing consumer waste is not enough. 95 percent of our stuff’s environmental impact happens upstream, during resource extraction and the manufacturing and distribution of goods. As The Story of Stuff documents, one trashcan of consumer waste represents 70 trashcans of upstream waste.
That's a lot of waste, and we can reduce it. We've already helped more than 230 companies rethink the way they do business. Measurable upstream impacts of our RE:think Business program include a 10% increase in waste prevention and recycling, a 15% increase in operational efficiency, and a 14% increase in water quality and conservation measures for certified businesses. 100 percent of RE:think businesses use recycled paper and biodegradable, non-toxic cleaners.
This is just the beginning. We are poised to help our business community improve its triple bottom line – people, profits, planet – while slashing waste. With your help, we can reach more businesses and work further upstream.
