Broke Spoke Community Bike Shop: To Provide Better Access to Better Bikes and to Empower Individuals to Perform Their Own Maintenance.

We are an all volunteer run community bike shop. We are open Tuesdays and Thursday 6-9 pm and Sundays 1-5 pm. We are located at 601 West Sixth St, Lexington KY, in the Breadbox which also houses the West Sixth Brewery, Roller Girls of Central Kentucky, and Cricket Press.

We have renovated a 2,500 sq ft. warehouse space that sits on the proposed legacy trail extension.

Like so many good things Broke Spoke was conceived during late night booze fueled discussions…about Lexington…what was good and what would make it better. We have been part of the groundswell of energy and activity surrounding bicycling for the past 10 years.

Events were planned and became institutions. Trails were dreamed and built. Bike lanes were requested and added. All the while more and more people started riding their bikes. everywhere.

There was still something missing. There are an awful lot of people who would rather not ride but don’t have a choice. Those people are also the most vulnerable: riding in all weather, at night without lights, without a rudimentary understanding of traffic rules, on bikes that many would put on the curb. They need a place to learn how to fix something and have access to the tools to do so. They also need better access to better bikes.

There was a second group of people out there, as well. These people ride because they want to and need to learn more about maintaining their bike. They are people who would ride more if they felt confident about the laws, about riding in traffic. The common denominator is that there are people out there that want to learn and don’t have the outlet. Broke Spoke has become that outlet.
